One Big Switch is today launching the Big Energy Switch, a campaign to cut the cost of electricity and gas in Ireland and reward energy customers for their loyalty.

One Big Switch need 10,000 new registrants to bring their membership to 130,000. They’ll use this collective buying power to unlock group-discounted electricity & gas offers.

Different to previous Big Switch campaigns; One Big Switch will make the unprecedented demand that the offer be made available to the winning energy retailers’ existing customers.

One Big Switch has launched the Big Energy Switch because:

  • Exclusive of taxes, Ireland has the second highest electricity prices in the EU[1], yet
  • 4/5 (78%) households are on standard electricity plans, not receiving a discount[2] and
  • Currently, no retailer offers their customers discounts equivalent to new customers.

There are discounts for new customers, often equating to yearly savings of over €400. By not switching and staying on standard rates, consumers are effectively paying a loyalty tax.

Alarmingly, monthly switching numbers were down 10.3% in Q2 2017 from Q2 2016 despite switching being the easiest and quickest way to save on energy costs.

David Liston, One Big Switch’s Director of Campaigns has launched the campaign in response to the fact so many Irish households are still on some of the most expensive deals out there.

Liston today commented; “Irish energy is up there with the most expensive in Europe, just ask the families out there paying for it; it’ll come as little surprise.

“What is surprising that 4 in every 5 of those families are still paying a loyalty tax by sitting on base rates, paying far too much for their electricity and gas.

“We want the Big Energy Switch campaign to work again and inspire a retailer to not only offer a great group-discount to new customers, but to their current loyal customers also.

“We need 10,000 more members to give us the immediately critical buying power to do this.”

One Big Switch recently ran the Big Cost of Living Switch, using people power to unlock market beating offers on energy, home insurance and broadband.

Joining the Big Energy Switch is entirely cost and obligation free. Consumers who wish to join can visit www.onebigswitch.ie.
