**PRESS RELEASE**: LET THE PRICE WAR BEGIN: OVER 90,000 CONSUMERS UNLOCK NEW MARKET BEATING ELECTRICITY & GAS OFFERS

The people power of more than 90,000 Irish consumers has once again succeeded in unlocking market beating electricity and gas offers in Ireland.

The offers, from Bord Gáis Energy include group discounted electricity-only offers and dual fuel offers.

One electricity only offer has a 12% electricity discount in Year 1, and €140 cash back off any electricity bill at any time. Similarly, a dual fuel offer has a 14% electricity discount and an 8% gas discount in Year 1, and €140 cash back off any electricity bill at any time.

The market beating dual fuel offer boasts a combination of significant cash back, and a meaningful discount which could wipe up to €337* off energy bills in the coming year.

Setting a new bar in energy discounting, every household in Ireland should be eligible to take up one of the offers unlocked, including:

  • Existing Bord Gais Energy electricity and gas customers, and
  • Households in rural areas restricted to electricity-only offers
  • The Big Energy Switch offers are also obligation free, which means customers can use it them to negotiate a better deal from their current supplier.

Anyone can access the offers by visiting www.onebigswitch.ie. The offers are open to all One Big Switch members until midnight on Friday 6 May 2016.

One Big Switch Senior Campaigner; David Liston said today, “These market beating offers unlocked by One Big Switch members are testament to the strength of people power.

“It’s proof that determined consumers working together can help to relieve the energy affordability crisis in Ireland.

“I would invite householders to see how these offers work for them and if the numbers stack up, then switch. They can also call their existing supplier and ask them to match the offer.”

The offer is available to residential customers throughout the 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland who join the campaign and switch online at www.OneBigSwitch.ie by midnight on 6 May 2016.

Those who are not yet registered can still do so at no cost or obligation.

I signed up for this deal with BGE. I invoked the €140 credit and it was applied to the bill I got today......., except I was not credited with €140! By some magic of fine print and jiggery-pokery with VAT, none of which I can figure out to my clarification, my total including VAT of €201.02 was reduced to €84.76, not €61.02 as I expected from all the (false?) advertising of the deal. I will now be contacting OneBigSwitch about this. It looks like perhaps that instead of getting a €140 credit, instead I got €140 minus 13.5% taken off my pre-vat total.

I thought that there was supposed to be a bundle of club card points with this offer. Did I imagine this? And if not, how are they redeemed?

I have recently signed up for the electricity only offer. However I'm still being charged the same rate as before. I have also asked for the cashback to be applied to my account and while if was promised over the phone, I haven't received it. Maybe I could get a better offer myself. Cormac O'Reilly

My contract with Bord GAIS IS COMING TO AN END, BUT NEW CONTRACT SEEMS TO be ELECTRICITY ONLY 10% off plus €100 discount when required instead of 12% plus €140 as advertised?

Should we not be told the base prices before discount so we can compare, or do they all charge the same. Dave T.

Energia are 14.15 kwh and 139 euro PA standing charge which is cheaper then this deal. Or am I missing something?

Anything that encourages competition in the marketplace is welcome. However, I am disappointed that Bord Gais DECIDED (CORRECTION) to offer different terms and conditions to existing and new customers. It shows that customer loyalty costs the customer money. I would think that existing customers who signed for this Big Switch campaign will go elsewhere this year and perhaps, come back next year as "new " customers again. However, there is still time for Bord Gais to cop on and extend the €140 off and 12% discount to existing customers.
